The value of money

If your Wisconsin state quarter looks like this:

it is worth several hundred dollars.

If your Wisconsin state quarter looks like this:

it is also worth several hundred dollars.

Sadly, the Wisconsin state quarter in your pocket almost certainly looks like this:

and so it is worth just about a quarter (with free shipping).

Somehow it seems like the "regular" quarter ought to be worth slightly less than 25 cents, so that, on average, all quarters are worth 25 cents.

But I guess instead, the "average quarter" is actually worth more than 25 cents, since if you choose a quarter at random there's a small probability that it's worth several hundred dollars.

Also, I prefer the one with the droopy ear.

No, I think you forgot about conterfeit coins. These valuable surplus leaf coins will spawn lots of counterfeits. These, of course, have a value of zero, and therefore reset the value of the quarter back to $0.25.

It's really a very efficient system. The more valuable the coin is (beyond its face value) the more counterfeit ones are produced. It's really quite remarkable.
